I really love this RSA Hospital Use Only fabric. You might remember it from this post about the gift I embroidered for a friend, along with the Sublime Stitching Anatomical Heart. This time I turned it into a bag, and added a pocket because I decided it was time.

After sweet Lala inspired me to try the fat quarter bags on Sew Mama Sew I kept on with them. And decided that the first bag I had made, which was intended as a gift for Lala, was just not good enough. So today I unpicked it and remade it. I’m enamoured of the pleated version of the bag, but I’m just struggling to get those pleats right. So (sorry Lala) it’s not perfect, but it’s a lot cuter than it was. I think so anyway. Soon it’ll be winging its way to Cape Town filled with all sorts of goodies…

Sew Mama Sew has the nicest tutorials for beautiful projects. Elizabeth, of Oh Fransson, posted this fantastic Spring Bag Tutorial back in April and I downloaded it immediately, but didn’t get to using it for a while. Then I went crazy over it. There are some mildly fiddly bits – mainly folding and pressing the handles – but otherwise this is a madly easy bag that you can make in about an hour. Perfect for gifts! I’ve made both the shoulder bag and the handbag version for myself, and just this morning made another shoulder bag for a friend [who had found this gorgeous Amy Butler fabric in a local fabric shop that now seems to be totally out of stock 😦 ]. Next up, I’m going to try making a slightly larger version for my mom, who wants a beach bag.

Finally, all done. I’m not sure that the contact on the outside is going to work. Wear and tear … We’ll see. But it looks great. The photo below shows the lining being inserted, glued and pegged into place, and then the final bag with clear contact wrapping the outside. It looks so cute!
